Description: The Joint Allied Threat Awareness System (JATAS) is a joint US Navy and US Marine Corps program to develop the next generation missile warning system for helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft. The program's office awarded a 16-month technology demonstration phase contract to two industry teams in November 2009. After the 16-month phase both prototypes will be demonstrated and the US Navy will down-select one of them. The JATAS threat awareness system will protect aircrews from MANPADS (man portable air defense systems), and also detect laser-guided weapons and hostile fire from small arms and rockets. JATAS is synthesized in an open architecture design that allows easy updates with other self-protection functions in the future. The current expendable countermeasure can be augmented by a directional, infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) using existing interfaces.
