Description: The Mk 251 Active Decoy Round provides protection for Royal Navy ships against attack from homing missiles. Once the missile has been identified by the ship's electronic support measures equipment the system selects the best barrel to launch from (up to 500m away form the ship) and sets the timing of a parachute to deploy effectively the active decoy. The active decoy emits a radar signal that attracts the incoming missile heading it away from the ship. The Mk 251 countermeasures system will counter homing missiles threats for the next ten years, according to the Royal Navy estimates.
The Mk 251 countermeasures system has already been deployed in the Persian Gulf. The MoD intends to provide Mk 251 countermeasures to Type 42 and 45 destroyers, Type 22 and 23 frigates, Aircraft Carriers, LPD, LPH and AOR.
