Description: The Surface-to-Air Anti-Missile (SAAM) is a advanced, short-range, ship-based air defense system designed to engage multiple, simultaneous threats at ranges of up to 30 kilometers. The system includes a multifunctional radar, a command and control (C2) unit, Sylver vertical launching system (VLS) and Aster 15 surface-to-air missiles. The highly maneuverable Aster 15 missile can engage fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and anti-ship missiles. SAAM entered service with the French Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in December 2002.

The SAAM-IT is the version adopted by the Italian Navy and features Empar as its multifunctional radar while the French version, SAAM-FR, uses the Arabel radar system. Besides, the system can be enhanced with long range surveillance radars. Saudi Arabia and Italy have ordered this air defense system to equip their Sawari II class frigates and Conte di Cavour aircraft carrier respectively. The SAAM is a prime candidate to provide short-range air defense for FREMM multi-purpose frigates ordered by the French and Italian Navies.
