Description: The Shtil-1 is a multi-channel, shipborne, medium range, air defense system designed for medium displacement ships such as Talwar class frigates. The Shtil-1 air defense system has been designed to use the 9M317 and 9M317M surface-to-air missiles to engage fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, missiles, boats and small vessels. The weapon system is flexible enough to allow utilization of single-missile ramp launcher (9M317) or Vertical Launching Systems/VLS (9M317M) for maximum weapons availability. The Shtil-1 is capable of engaging from two to up to 12 targets simultaneously assigning one, two or three missiles per target automatically. The system has been designed to engage targets flying at altitudes between 5 to 15,000 meters at ranges between 3,500 meters and 50 kilometers with speeds below 3,000 kilometers per hour. The Shtil-1 air defense system was deployed in 2003 onboard the Indian Navy INS Talwar frigate.
