Description:
The M41 ITAS (Improved Target Acquisition Sight) is the latest TOW missile Command Launch Unit for ground forces. Like the TOW 2 launcher, it can be installed on ground vehicles (HMMWV) or on a tripod. The ITAS increases the system's target detection, acquisition, recognition and engagement ranges and is able to fire all variants of the TOW missile.
ITAS features a second generation FLIR and eyesafe laser range finder. It enables TOW missiles firing in adverse weather conditions, day and night, 24/7, and in all battlefield conditions.
The US Army awarded Raytheon a $32 million contract to resume ITAS production on April 21, 2005. From 1999 through 2003, Raytheon produced and delivered up to 790 ITAS units to the US Army. After ITAS was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq) and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) the Army assessed that the ITAS launching system was able to take out urban targets without collateral damage.
In September 2006, the US Army awarded Raytheon a $285 million five-year contract for continued production of ITAS through October 2012 for the US Army and the US Marine Corps. The contract covers 623 ITAS and 33 spare sets: 438 are for the Marines, 218 are for the Army. The contract included an option for 1,600 additional ITAS valued at more than $750 million. The US Army exercised a contract option worth $161.8 million for ITAS production on November 27, 2006.
