Description: AN/SQS-53 is a computer controlled sonar set provided to surface ships which features both active and passive mode. Its primary sensor is hull mounted transducer array. In addition to search, detection and track of submarine threats, SQS-53C is responsible for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapons fire control and guidance to its assigned underwater target.
To date, SQS-53C is the most sophisticated sonar in service with the US Navy's surface combatant fleet. SQS-53D designation refers to SQS-53A/B models upgraded with Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology adding thus increased processing capability. SQS-53 sonar have been integrated onto Ticonderoga-class (CG-47) cruisers, Spruance-class, Kidd-class, and Arleigh A. Burke-class destroyers.
