Description: The ARTISAN 3D (Advanced Radar Target Indication Situational Awareness and Navigation) is a modular open architecture maritime radar system designed to deal with complex littoral environments. The radar system has been developed in partnership between BAE Systems Insyte, Qinetiq and Roke Manor Research under ARTIST program framework. On August 4, 2008, the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defense (MoD) selected the ARTISAN 3D for the Royal Navy's Medium Range Radar (MRR) capability under a £100 million contract covering demonstration, manufacturing, delivery and the first 10 years of in-service support. The radar system will be installed aboard the Royal Navy's Type 23 class frigates, Ocean amphibious assault ship and Albion-class auxiliary vessels between 2011 and 2015. Besides, the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers will be equipped with ARTISAN 3D medium range radar.

The ARTISAN 3D has been developed to fully support the upgraded Seawolf surface-to-air missile system while improving the ship's overall situational awareness and provide a secondary navigation radar capability. It will replace the existing Type 996 surveillance and target indication radar, as well as subsuming the navigation radar functionality currently provided by the Radar 1008. According to the UK MoD the Artisan 3D is able to track a target the size of a snooker ball over 20 km away. BAE Systems Insyte will manufacture the radar system at its plant in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
