Description: The Russian Navy Batareya, 'Battery' in English, is a powerful sonar intended to detect fourth generation nuclear submarines lurking in the deep. The sonar's transmitter/receiver unit can be lowered to around 300 meters into the water and the data is transmitted back to the surface via a fiber optic cable. The new sensor can operate during dead calm situations and heavy clutter conditions. Besides, the sonar can differentiate between submarine noise and natural noise from marine creatures, waves, stones, etc. The Russian Navy is developing the Batareya sonar to detect Western nuclear-powered submarines and to test its own nuclear-powered submarines design singling out noiser elements. The Batareya is scheduled to under test trials before the end of 2015 and achieve operational status in 2016 or 2017.
