Description: The AN/AAQ-28 LITENING is a multipurpose targeting and navigation pod designed to provide tactical aircraft with 24-hour precision strike capability against both land and sea based targets. Originally, it was developed by Rafael for servicing on the Israel Air Force tactical aircraft. In 1995 Northrop-Grumman joined Israel boosting the LITENING product development which led to the more capable LITENING II available from 1999. The LITENING pod system comprises an imaging IR camera FLIR, a CCD-TV, a INS, a laser marker, and a laser spot tracker/rangefinder. The LITENING II pod has been ordered in the United States by the Marine Corps (USMC), Air Force Reserve (AFRes) and the Air National Guard (ANG). In addition to the United States and Israel, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy and Australia have ordered the LITENING for their tactical aircraft.
Sweden has integrated the LITENING targeting pod on its JAS 39 Gripen and Germany on its Tornado interdiction aircraft. The LITENING is used by Israel primarily on its F-16 tactical aircraft and the United States uses this pod on a wide variety of tactical aircraft including B-52H bomber. Rafael is marketing the LITENING advanced targeting and navigation pod for integration onto F-4, F-5, Eurofighter/Typhoon (EF2000), Mirage 2000, Jaguar, AMX, Su-27 and Mig-21 aircraft. Actually, the pod has been demonstrated on these platforms.
