Description: The Novella is an advanced sensor package developed to the equip the modernized Ilyushin Il-38N anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The new sensor is capable of detecting targets at ranges of up to 320 km while providing radar observation of underwater, surface and airborne targets. The Novella system is managed by a digital computer that requires two human operators. In addition to the radar, the system comprises a new high resolution thermal imaging system, a magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) system, an electro-optical detection system (including laser, TV and thermal channels), gravitational anomaly detector (GAD) and other equipment. The Russian Navy accepted the first Il-38N aircraft fitted with the Novella sensor package in March 2012.
