Description: The Sampson is a multi-function, surveillance and tracking radar evolved from the MESAR program. The Sampson radar system will be installed on the British Type 45 Daring-class destroyers foremast and integrated along with Aster 15/30 missiles into PAAMS (Primary Anti-Air Missile System) weapon system. In early September 2004, the first Sampson multifunctional radar system was installed on a representative Type 45 destroyer foremast at Alenia Marconi Systems' Cowes site for testing. As of September 2004, two Sampson radar systems were completed with PAAMS integration and trials scheduled for 2005. Installed on Type 45 destroyers this radar can detect sea skimming missiles at ranges of 40 kilometers.
