Description: The Shmel II is an upgraded variant of the Shmel long-range, air surveillance radar developed for the upgraded A-50U Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). The Shmel II radar was developed by the Vega Radio Engineering Corp. It can detect a fighter sized aircraft at a maximum range of 400 kilometers while a missile launch at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers. Besides, the Shmel II radar system can track up to 300 targets simultaneously while directing interceptor jets to up to 40 targets simultaneously. All in the Shmel II is a big improvement compared with the Shmel I radar. It entered service in 2011 along with the A-50U AWACS aircraft.
