Description: The Space Fence is a space surveillance radar located in the Marshall Islands and built by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force (USAF) as the replacement for an existing radar system built in the 1960s. Operating in the S-band the Space Fence radar is intended to detect hundreds of thousands (+200,000) of satellites and space debris with more precision than legacy space surveillance radars. As of 2015 there are more than 17,000 pieces of space debris orbiting around the Earth. Construction of the Space Fence radar on the Kwajalein Atoll started in February 2015 under a $1.5 billion contract and is set to come online in 2018.
