Description: The Russian Aerospace Defense Forces Voronezh is a family of long-range, early warning and surveillance radars designed to detect and track a wide range of threats such as ballistic missiles, aircraft and satellites. The Voronezh early warning system is capable of tracking up to 500 objects simultaneously and has been designed for energy efficiency. The Voronezh family is based on modular off-the-shelf radar technology. It comprises tens of modules that can be assembled in 12-24 months at a prepared concrete slab site. The modular approach of the Voronezh radar system makes them upgradeable and re-deployable to another area with ease. The radar family includes three variants: Voronezh-DM (4), Voronezh-M (2) and Voronezh-VP (1) . The first one entered into service in early 2009. Russia started construction of two more radars in 2016 in the Komi Republic and in the Amur Region. The tenth radar site construction is planned for 2017 in Murmansk Region.
The Voronezh-VP ultra long-range surveillance radar operates in the Extremely High Frequency (EHF) band with a detection range of 4,500 to 6,000 kilometers. The Voronezh-VP radar can detect an object flying at an altitude of up to 4,000 kilometers. The only Voronezh-VP radar located in Mishlevka, Irkutsk region (Siberia), is responsible for monitoring the airspace from the US west coast to India. It started operating in December 2014.
