Description:
The LM500 marine gas turbine is based on from General Electric's TF34 aircraft engine incorporating many of the same materials on the LM2500 marine gas turbine. The LM500 has 90 percent commonality with the TF34 engine that powers the CRJ100/200 regional jet family.
The LM500 gas turbine is excellent suitable for ships requiring low dimensions, lightweight and fuel economy. It uses a two-shaft layout consisting of a gas generator, a free power turbine and cold end drive capabilities.
The LM500 has been selected by the Danish Navy for its Stanflex 300 patrol boat using CODAG; the Japanese Navy Ichi Go-class missile boats (CODOG) and Hayabusa patrol boats (COGAG). The LM500 is also used to power two Foilcat high-speed commercial ferries that operate in Hong Kong. As of July 2005, General Electric has 67 turbines on order having logged more than 140,000 service hours.
On 30 June 2005, General Electric Transportation and Samsung Techwin signed an agreement for the supply of LM500 marine gas turbine. The turbines will be assembled and tested locally in the Republic of Korea for integration into Republic of Korea Navy's PK(X) patrol boats.
