Description: The Rolls-Royce's MT30 is a leading-edge technology, modular, marine gas turbine developing up to 36 MW of power (48,000-shp at 26 Celsius) and featuring 80 percent commonality with successful Trent 800 aero engine. This commonality ensures high reliability and low operating costs. The modularity also adds up simplified maintenance. Trent 800 engines are renowned for powering the Boeing 777 wide-body, long-range jetliner. MT30 was developed for application on a wide range of maritime platforms ranging from corvettes to aircraft carriers in the military segment or from cruisers to carrier ships for civil customers.

Self-contained into a 22-t (drive configuration) package the MT30 is suitable for both providing ship power and propulsion while its thermal efficiency (> 40%) translates into 0.21 kg of fuel to generate one kWhr (specific consumption). Installed as a power generator set weighs approximately 77-ton. The MT30 naval gas turbine received the design approval in 2004. In February 2005, the engine gas turbine generator set received the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification which enabled the engine for operation with the US Navy. Through April 2005, the engine had logged more than 1,500 hours of testing at 100F (38 Celsius) performing successfully.

To date, the MT30 has been selected for the Lockheed-Martin Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Flight 0 and the DD(X) multi-mission destroyer Engineering Demonstration Model (EDM), DD(X) program took delivery of its first MT30 in February 2005. It has been included in the baseline design of two new British aircraft carriers under the CVF program. In addition, it is also being considered for the French PA2 aircraft carrier and the Franco-Italian FREMM multi-mission frigates.
