Description: Empar is a G-band, multifunction, active phased array radar being developed for the Italian Navy and French Navy. Its rotating antenna at 60 rpm provides continuous surveillance, tracking and weapons fire control. The radar system can operate in intense conditions of clutter and jamming countering airborne threats such as supersonic aircraft, sea-skimming missiles, supersonic missiles, rotary wing aircraft, UAVs, etc.

Empar rotating antenna performs real-time extensive volumetric search coverage, low altitude and surface search and multiple target tracking operational functions executed on the basis of assigned priorities, continually adapting its operational mode selecting transmission frequency, waveforms and signal and data processing in real time. An uplink transmission mode is available when missile guidance function is called for.

The Empar radar system will be integrated on the Horizon frigates ordered by Italy and France and the Italian Navy's Conte di Cavour, originally known as the Andrea Doria, aircraft carrier. In December 2002, the Empar was certified for the SAAM-IT air defense system following three successful launches out of three. The EMPAR-PAAMS air defense system was installed on the Italian Navy Carabiniere experimental ship in October 2004. Test firings and qualification of EMPAR-PAAMS are scheduled to begin before the end of 2005.

To date, the EMPAR radar system has been selected for the Horizon anti-air warfare (AAW) frigate, Cavour aircraft carrier and FREMM multi-purpose frigate program under development for the French Navy and the Italian Navy. EMPAR selection for the FREMM program was made public in October 2004.
