Sextant

Also Known As: Shaman

Origin: United Kingdom

Contractor/s: BAE Systems

Description: BAE Systems Sextant is the next generation infrared sensor for shipboard applications developed by BAE and the QinetiQ Group plc on behalf of the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defense (MoD) under the Shaman program. The Sextant is meant to provide Maritime Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) for the Royal Navy. The ISTAR program is valued at £140 million over a 20+ years period.

The Sextant sensor includes Diamond Software leverage as the core of the system developed by BAE Systems as well as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components. In addition to Diamond open architecture software, the Sextant senor also includes open architecture at the hardware level lowering integration costs and obsolescence risks.

In June 2005, the UK MoD awarded BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies a seven-month $12.5 million for the advanced demonstration phase of the Shaman project.
