Description: The Athena III space launch vehicle has been designed to transport equipment to the International Space Station (ISS) within NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) program. The CRS services are expected to start by 2011 after the retirement of the troubling Space Shuttle. ATK provides the highly reliable and cost effective Athena III launch vehicle for the PlanetSpace team which also includes Boeing and Lockheed Martin. PlanetSpace is the prime contractor for the cargo servicing capability.

The three-stage Athena III space launch vehicle consists of a 2.5 segment derivative of the NASA Space Shuttle's four-segment Solid Rocket Booster (SRB); the CASTOR120, utilized on the Athena I, Athena II and Taurus I launch vehicles; and the CASTOR 30 third stage and a flight-proven Orbit Adjust Module. ATK will manufacture the Athena III rocket and provide the ground processing while Boeing and Lockheed Martin will be responsible for the modular Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTV) whose goal is to deliver the payloads to the ISS.
