Description: The Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (Next Gen OPIR) is a US Air Force program aimed at delivering a new constellation of IR surveillance satellites in the 2020s. The new satellites are expected to monitor ballistic missile launches from the territory of China and Russia among others providing thus early warning against any ballistic missile launch. The Next Gen OPIR constellation will consist of three Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) space vehicles and two Polar Earth Orbit (PEO) space vehicles. The first satellite launch is scheduled in 2023 with the system becoming fully operational with five spacecrafts placed into orbit by 2029.

The Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared Polar Earth Orbit Space Vehicles (Next Gen OPIR PEOSV) is a US Air Force program aimed at delivering two IR surveillance satellites in the 2020s. Northrop Grumman is expected to be awarded a contract for two satellites before 2022. The PEOSV satellites launch are planned to begin in 2027 and conclude in 2029 when the Next Gen OPIR constellation is expected to achieve full operational capability.
