IOC: 2002
Total Production: 130

Also Known As: F-2A (single-seat), F-2B (twin-seat), XF-2

Origin:Japan

Contractor/s: Lockheed Martin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Description: The F-2, XF-2 prototype, is a derivative of the combat-proven F-16C/D Fighting Falcon being developed between Lockheed-Martin (40%) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (60%). The F-2 multi-role fighter is superseding the F-1 aircraft in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

The F-2 features advanced radar waves absorbing materials, an enlarged wing area over the F-16 (25% approximately) providing greater fuel load, a more powerful engine, 2 additional weapon stations over the F-16, and enlarged fuselage and horizontal tails. Majority of avionics and electronic equipment are produced in Japan.

Despite the F-2 is air-to-air and air-to-surface capable, the aircraft will be used for the air-to-surface role specially for anti-ship missions. The Japanese government has authorized production of 94 F-2s.
