Description:
Mig-25, dubbed Foxbat by NATO, is a twin-engine, single-seat, high-speed, high-altitude interceptor aircraft developed in the 1960s by the Soviet Union to counter American supersonic strategic bombers. Originally it was designed to match XB-70 Valkyria high-supersonic strategic bomber but this aircraft was cancelled by the United States Air Force. Mig-25 is able to fly at Mach 3 and is equipped with a wide range of air-to-air missiles. Continuous upgrades have allowed the Mig-25 aircraft to encompass new capabilities such as high-altitude reconnaissance, training and strike.
Mig-25 was criticized by its poor maneuverability. Many variants were deployed by the Soviet Air Force including two-seat models. It saw combat for the first time on the hands of Syrian pilots in the 1970s against the Israel Air Force. Like the Mig-23 it was deemed as a low performance aircraft due maybe by the lack of proper training of its pilots. During the Gulf War in 1991 an Iraqi Mig-25 was reported to have shot down a coalition F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.
