Description:
Saab 37 Viggen is a single-engine, delta-wing, multirole fighter developed in the 1960s as a replacement for Lansen. To meet the Swedish Air Force requirements for a Mach 2 Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) interceptor the Viggen, which translates Thunderbolt, features canard foreplanes. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney JT8D/RM8 turbofan engine manufactured by Volvo its top speed surpasses Mach 2. RM8 engine is rated at 28,000-lb of thrust.
Viggen armament includes a 30mm cannon, AIM-9 Sidewinder, Skyflash, Maverick, AIM-120, RBS-15 missiles, rockets and bombs. Production started in the late 1960s with the Swedish Air Force taking delivery of 110 AJ 37 ground attack models from 1971. SH 37 (26) and SF 37 (26) are reconnaissance variants. SK 37 (18) is a tandem two-seat training variant. JA 37 interceptor was the last production model with 149 aircraft delivered through to 1990.
As of 2004, the Swedish Air Force had 5 twin-seat SK 37 and 10 AJ 37 aircraft operational with Gripens taking their place in the upcoming years.
