Sonar 2076

IOC: 2005
Unitary Cost: GBP£18 million   (USD$29 million)
Also Known As: S2076

Origin: United Kingdom

Contractor/s: Thales

Description: Sonar 2076 is a very sophisticated submarine sonar suite capable of detecting and tracking small targets from hundreds of miles away. This advanced sonar system relies on a computer system equivalent to several hundred of current home PCs. It has been selected for installation on the Royal Navy's nuclear attack submarine (SSN) fleet.

The United Kingdom's Royal Navy was retrofitting Sonar 2076 to the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered attack submarines during the early years of the 21st century. The sonar upgrade was executed along with installation of a new core for the Pressurized Water Reactor PWR1. Sonar 2076 was also selected to outfit the newest Royal Navy's Astute-class nuclear attack submarines.
