Submarine Acoustic Warfare Control System

Origin
United Kingdom

Contractor/s
SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems

Description: The Submarine Acoustic Warfare Control System (SAWCS) is an underwater situational awareness system intended to detect, classify and locate torpedoes that have been deployed nearby of own submarine. Following the initial sequence SAWCS assigns a threat level to each one of the torpedoes loitering in the area.

Once SAWCS has assigned a threat level, it generates a tactical plan to evade these torpedoes which eventually could involve deployment of acoustic countermeasures and the execution of maneuvers by the submarine. If the evasive plan gets green light from ship's commander, SAWCS allows to deploy acoustic countermeasures automatically.

The Royal Navy has ordered the SAWCS system for its submarine fleet with an in-service date planned for February 2005.
