Description: The multi-purpose transport aircraft (MPTA), formerly referred to as MTS or MTC in Cyrillic or Il-214, is being developed by Ilyushin Aviation Complex for the freight market. The aircraft will be powered by two high-by-pass ratio 23,000-pound class turbofan engines on under wing pylons from Russian or Western suppliers. The production MPTA will be powered by two more powerful PS-90A-76 engines developing 16,000 kg of thrust each. The basic MPTA will be capable of carrying a cargo of 18.5-20 tons over a distance of 2,250 kilometers. Ilyushin claims that its airplane will be able to operate from unprepared airfields under a wide spectrum of climate conditions at day or night. In February 2009, Russia and India disclosed negotiations for a potential joint venture known as Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) to manufacture the dual-purpose civil/military freight aircraft in both countries. The new aircraft will have a cargo capacity of 20 tons. The first intergovernmental agreement on the joint development of MTA was signed in 2007. Russia and India would take delivery of 100 and 45 such aircraft respectively.

The new transport aircraft development is valued at $600 million and is intended to replace aging planes such as An-12, An-26 and An-32 beginning in 2017. In May 2012, the first MTA aircraft was expected to perform its maiden flight in 2017 entering into service in 2019. In early 2016 India cancelled the project and Russia became the only sponsor country behind the project being re-named as the Il-276. The aircraft maiden flight was delayed to 2023 and its intro into service by 2025. The Il-276 airplane will be powered by two fuel-efficient PD-14M engines thus providing improved flight performance. The Russian Air Force will require no less than 55 airplanes.
