Description: The Ilyushin Il-80 is an airborne command, control and communications (C3) platform designed to be used by the authorities of the Russian Federation in the event of nuclear war. The aircraft purpose is to give the Russian leadership the ability to command a counterstrike using conventional and nuclear weapons when ground facilities have been destroyed. The radar is fitted with a comprehensive communications suite with antenna bay mounted over the nose in a similar configuration used by the United States E-4B aircraft. Besides, the Il-80 features two under wing mounted pods and what seems to be a nose-mounted air refueling probe to extend its radius of operation. The Russian Air Force Il-80 platform is a modified Il-86/Il-96 airliner and was first showcased over Moscow's Red Square during the celebrations of the Victory Day in May 2010.
