Description: The Kamov Ka-27 was developed to replace the Ka-25 shipborne helicopter in the Soviet Navy performing Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. In addition, the Ka-27 was designed to operate at night and all-weather conditions which were the main shortfalls of Ka-25 aircraft. The NATO nicknamed this aircraft as Helix. The Ka-28 is the designation assigned to export models and Ka-32 designation refers to variants intended for the civil/commercial market. The Soviet Union's Navy also developed the Ka-29 shipborne assault helicopter and the Ka-31 airborne radar helicopter based on the Ka-27 platform. The aircraft uses Kamov's characteristic twin three-blade coaxial contra-rotating rotors design making the tail rotor irrelevant and unnecessary. It is powered by two TV3-117V/VMA turboshaft engines each rated at 2,200-hp. The Ka-27 prototype first flew in 1973 and entered service in 1981.

The Ka-27M is an extreme upgraded version of the Ka-27 multi-purpose naval helicopter being developed to meet the requirements of the Russian Navy in the 2010-2020 timeframe. The Ka-27M is intended to perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) missions. In 2011, the Russian Navy plans called for the procurement of up to 70 Ka-27M and Ka-29M by 2020 along with 30 Ka-52 and 20 Ka-226 helicopters.
