Description: The Sperwer, also known as Ugglan in Sweden and CU-161 in Canada, is a modular, low observable, multi-mission, delta-wing unmanned air vehicle (UAV) designed to provide real time Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition an Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities in support of land forces. Sagem Defense Securite developed this UAV system in response to the French Army's SDTI (Système de Drones Tactiques Intérimaire or Interim Tactical UAV System) program. The Sperwer UAV family offering more than six hours of flight endurance includes the basic version, a high speed low altitude drone variant and a long endurance variant known as Sperwer B.

The Spervwer air vehicle utilizes a vehicle-mounted ramp for taking off and a combination of parachute and airbags for landing. Its payload includes the synthetic aperture radar (SAR), electronic warfare (EW), communications relay or EUROFLIR optronic gimbaled pod that may include daylight CCD-TV sensor, laser designator/rangefinder and/or day/night Infrared imagery sensor. A single Sperwer system includes a ground control station, ground data terminal with the tactical data link, a vehicle integrated with a catapult launcher and air vehicles. The ground control station can control two air vehicles at the same time.

The Sperwer air vehicle offers a 50 kg payload with a flight endurance of six hours over ranges up to 200 kilometers. It entered service with the French Army in 2001 receiving several export orders from European customers in the following years. In August 2003, Canada ordered the Sperwer UAV system worth $30 million in support of operation Athena in Afghanistan. The Canadian armed forces received from Oerlikon Contraves Inc. (acting as Sagem subcontractor) four Sperwer UAVs, two ground control stations, one launch vehicle and spare parts and logistics support.
