Description: The Akash is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile (SAM) manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited and capable of engaging fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). It features a maximum range of 27 kilometers carrying a 60 kg warhead, a semi-active radar seeker and a top speed of Mach 3.5 with a load factor of 20gs. Mounted on ramps is the primary weapon for the Akash air defense system. India may develop an enhanced version featuring an extended range of up to 60 km and a dual mode radar/infrared seeker. The enhanced Akash SAM may be intended to counter ballistic missiles. In addition, a vertical-launch navalized version of the Akash may be fielded by the Indian Navy.
