Description:
The Type 91, also known as SAM-2, is a man-portable, shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by Toshiba as the replacement for the FIM-92 Stinger missile within the Japan Self-Defense Forces. The missile's guidance system uses a combination of imagery and infrared seeker. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGDSF) has deployed the Type 91 missile within artillery and armored units for self-defense purposes only against low flying aircraft and helicopters. Externally, the missile and its launch unit are very similar to their predecessors.
