Description:
CL-289 is an airborne reconnaissance system comprising reusable drones and a ground control station and launch vehicle. This program was developed in partnership between Germany, France and Canada achieving Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 1991 with the German Army. In support of military customers at division and corps levels CL-289 drone provides critical information on reconnaissance, target location, classification, and post-strike damage assessment.
CL-289 drone powered by a turbojet engine flies a pre-programmed mission at subsonic speeds with the guidance system relying on the GPS and inertial navigation systems. Imagery is provided through TV and Infrared (IR) sensors payload. Germany also studied the possibility of integrating a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) onto this aerial unmanned vehicle. The CL-289 was successfully deployed in Kosovo and Bosnia in support of German and French military units in the 1990s.
AOLOS-289 is an upgraded variant of CL-289 featuring new software, enhanced performance, ease of maintenance and repair activities. This upgrade was available from April 2003. The AOLOS-289 upgrade was retrofitted to 160 surviving German and French drones between 2003 and 2006. AOLOS-289 upgrade program development costs were valued at 36 million Euro.
