Description:
The Sperwer (Ugglan Swedish designation) is a low observable, delta-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) meant for ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) missions. It can be equipped with daylight CCD-TV sensor or day/night Infrared imagery sensor. The UAV requires a ramp for the taking off operation and uses a parachute and airbags for landing.
In August 2003, Canada ordered the Sperwer UAV system worth $30 million in support of operation Athena in Afghanistan. The Canadian armed forces received from Oerlikon Contraves Inc. (acting as Sagem subcontractor) 4 Sperwer UAVs, two ground control stations, one launch vehicle and spare parts and logistics support.
Under the French Army SDTI (Système de Drones Tactiques Intérimaire or Interim Tactical UAV System) program Sagem has developed two advanced derivatives of the Sperwer UAV to meet more specific mission requirements. The Sperwer HV high velocity UAV and Sperwer LE long endurance UAV.
