BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa

Description: The Casspir is a four-wheel, all-mine protected armored vehicle featuring high mobility, easy handling and crew comfort. Other key characteristics are the use of drive line units, ease of maintenance, high availability and cost-effective operational usage. Its revolutionary design allows the crew compartment to withstand triple anti-tank mines under any wheel or double tank mines under the hull. The Casspir is manufactured by BAE Land Systems OMC of South Africa, formerly Alvis, with several hundred vehicles produced so far for the South African National Defense Forces (SANDF) and at least 11 international customers.

The Casspir has been designed to allow rapid field repair after a mine detonation to comply with the requirements of the South African National Defense Forces. The vehicle' hull and bulletproof glass provides ballistic protection against calibers up to 5.56mm and 7.62mm NATO standard ball ammunition. Besides, the Casspir also offers protection against artillery shells and an additional add-on armor kit provides protection against 7.62mm armor piercing (AP) ammo. Until 2004 the Casspir Mk 2C (I) was the production model featuring a TATA drive line with excellent on- and off-road mobility. The current production model, Casspir Mk III, was introduced in late 2004/ early 2005 and features increased mobility.

Alvis OMC, now BAE Land Systems OMC, was awarded a R164 million contract by Armscor for the upgrade and refurbishment of SANDF's Casspir Mk II vehicles in August 2004. These Casspirs will be upgraded to the Casspir Mk III standard including structure modifications for increased mobility with more robust axles. The modification work will be completed by February 2006.
