Description:
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is a family of light multi-purpose vehicles designed as a replacement for the US Army and Marines HMMWV having greater payload and higher survivability. JLTV family comprises five variants: the Combat Tactical Variant, the Command and Control Variant, the Utility Variant, the Light Infantry Squad Carrier Variant and the Reconnaissance Variant. The basic designs includes armor and provisions to accommodate add-on armor to achieve higher levels of protection.
Furthermore, JLTV will provide power supply for on-board and outside components while the engine is on or during extended silent watch. Additional requirements include: network-enabled, air transportability, high mobility and affordability. It is said that more than 160,000 JLTVs will be needed in the next 20 years to replace the Humvees.
As of early 2008, the industry teams competing for the US military JLTV program are: AM General and General Dynamics; Lockheed Martin and Alcoa; Boeing and Textron; Northrop Grumman and Oshkosh; BAE Systems and Navistar International Corporation; and Force Protection and DRS Technologies.
