Description:
The FV432 is a fully tracked multi-purpose armored vehicle developed by GKN Sankey after the Second World War to meet the requirements of the British Army. They are also known as the FV430 series vehicles or Trojan. The original FV432 family of vehicles assumed command and control post, ambulance, minelayer, recovery, repair, mortar, radar, anti-tank equipped with Swingfire missiles, or troop carrier roles. Its power plant consists of a Rolls Royce K60 multi-fuel engine developing 240-hp which allows a top speed of 52 kph. Carrying 10-passenger and a crew of two-man the FV432 covers unrefueled ranges of 480 km. In addition the vehicle was fitted with NBC protection and a 7.62mm or turret-mounted L37 machine guns. The first FV432 vehicle was ready in 1962. Series production started in 1963 with roughly 3,000 vehicles delivered until production ceased in 1971.
In 2001 the British Army was operating more than 1,000 FV432 vehicles and was the workhorse of British mechanized units. In October 2005 BAE Systems was awarded an £85 million contract to upgrade 500 FV430s thus increasing the vehicle's reliability. The UK Ministry of Defense plans called for the first 50 upgraded FV430s to be operational by August 2006 and thereafter 20 converted vehicles delivered back to the British Army per month. Currently, the FV430 vehicle has a crew of two-man and can carry as many as eight-passenger.
On 25 July 2006, the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced the procurement of 70 additional up-armored and upgraded FV430 tracked troop transport vehicles. Deliveries were scheduled to start at year end. The UK MoD had already issued a procurement contract for 54 such vehicles. Altogether, the 124 AFV430s were intended to build up a mechanized battlegroup in the Spring of 2007. This procurement contract was part of a £527 million Urgent Operational Requirements for Iraq and Afghanistan which also included Cougar (100) and Pinzgauer 6x6 (100) vehicles.
