Description:
The ZSD89, also known as Type 89, is a tracked armored vehicle developed by NORINCO in the 1980s as a replacement for aging tracked armored personnel carriers (APCs) within the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The ZSD89 armored vehicle has been designed to perform battlefield personnel transport and to provide combat fire support as well as other roles in dedicated versions. The vehicle has amphibious capability. The ZSD89 was cleared for mass production in 1990 and since then has been fielded with the PLA replacing Type 63 APCs.
The ZSD89 features a fully tracked chassis, a roof-mounted 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun, a two-man crew, a rear door and a troop compartment for up to 15 troops. The troop compartment has six firing ports that allow the troops to fire their weapons with the vehicle on the move. The ZSD89 is powered by a German-made diesel engine developing 320-hp. The ZSD89 armor provides effective protection against small arms fire below 12.7mm caliber. In addition, the ZSD89 can be equipped with anti-tank missiles and medium caliber guns.
