Description:
The PW6000 is a new engine providing thrust ranging from 18,000 pounds to 24,000 pounds. It is being developed to meet the demands of 100-seat capacity aircraft such as the Airbus A318. The first A318 powered by PW6000 engines (PW6124A) is expected to enter service with airlines towards the end of 2005.
The design is based on reliability and rugged durability and offers the lowest cost of ownership in its class. The engine is designed to stay on wing for up to 12,000 flights before overhaul and has fewer compressor and turbine parts than the competition resulting in a 30 percent maintenance cost advantage. The PW6124A version provides aircraft performance that short haul operators expect, while meeting Stage 4 aircraft noise requirements and CAEP 6 engine emissions requirements with margin.
PW6000 meets high-demand requirements for low noise and emissions levels while providing excellent performance as well as reliability and durability. Pratt & Whitney is currently developing the PW4122-ID and PW4124 models. The first flight of an Airbus A318 powered by PW6000 (PW6124A) engines took place at Airbus' Hamburg plant in Germany on December 9, 2004.
On 23 June 2005, PW6000 engine achieved European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) engine validation paving the way for engine certification on the A318 airliner in October 2005. The engine already earned Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) FAR 33 certification on 11 November 2004.
On 17 August 2005, LAN Airlines of Chile became the launch customer for the PW6000 ordering 34 engines to power 15 Airbus A318 airplanes. The agreement also included an option to power 25 additional A318s with 56 PW6000 engines. The firm order aircraft engines are 30 installed and four spares. The option is for 50 engines installed on the A318 aircraft plus six engines as spare.
Chile's LAN Airlines signed a agreement on 25 firm order Airbus A320s plus 15 aircraft options October 11th, 2005. The aircraft to be delivered to LAN from 2006 include the A320, A318 and A319 airplanes. LAN's A318 will be the first of such aircraft to be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW6000 engines with the remaining aircraft models to be powered by IAE V2500-A5 engines.
The assembly of the first production PW6000 engine was completed in September 2006 at MTU's facility in Langenhagen, Germany. The engine was meant to power an Airbus A318 ordered by LAN Airlines of Chile.
