Description: The SaM146 is a turbofan engine developed to meet the demands of jetliners operating on the regional market and short-to-medium range routes. It has been developed by PowerJet, a joint venture between Snecma Group of France and NPO Saturn of Russia, and was selected to power the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCA) Russian Regional Jet (RRJ) in 2003. The SaM146 engine power output ranges from 14,000-lb to 17,500-lb of thrust. Snecma's expertise gained with the CFM56 turbofan engine has been used on the SaM146 development.

SaM146 was designed specifically to power regional jets and thus has some special features to meet that goal better than may other engines that currently are powering regional airliners. All six variants of Russian RRJ are to be powered by the SaM146 engine which will be assembled in Russia by NPO Saturn. Snecma Group will provide the core engine, FADEC control system, accessory drive, overall engine integration and flight testing. In addition to managing the engine assembly line in Russia, NPO Saturn provides the components of the low pressure section and ground testing.

As of September 2005, SCA has received 60 orders/commitments for the RRJ from SIBIR Airlines and the Financial Leasing Company (FLC) that translates into at least 120 engines.

In late November 2005, Dubai-based Concern and Concord Aviation signed a contract for the delivery of 40 95-seat RRJ-95 jetliners. Concern and Concord Aviation is an aircraft leasing company.

On December 9, 2005, Aeroflot Russian Airlines became the launch customer for RRJ95 ordering 30 firm order aircraft powered by SaM146 engines and valued at $820 million. Aircraft deliveries were expected to commence in November 2008.
