Description: Saab 340 is a light, twin-engine turboprop aircraft capable of carrying from 30 to 36 passengers while cruising at 285 knots (500 mph) on routes of 500 nautical miles (900 km). The Saab 340 cabin is quiet, spacious and comfortable. The aircraft can operate from short airfields and provides fuel efficiency compared to regional jets.

To date, Saab has produced three main versions known as 340A, 340B/340B+ and 340B+ WT. Saab 340B+ WT features extended WingTips (WT) among other enhancements. 340A is powered by two CT7-5A2 engines rated at 1,735-shp and the remaining aircraft are powered by two CT7-9B engines rated at 1,870-shp each.

The Saab 340 can assume the role of airliner, VIP transport, corporate, cargo, maritime patrol and airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. The AEW&C variant is fitted with Ericsson PS-890 Erieye radar system. The Saab 340 AEW&C is also referred to as S 100B Argus. The Swedish Air Force and Thailand are the only operator for this aircraft variant.

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) awarded Saab a contract for two Saab 340B+ turboprop aircraft equipped for search and rescue missions on December 8, 2005. Both aircraft deliveries to JCG were scheduled for execution at the end of 2006. The search and rescue variant of Saab 340 airliner is known as the Saab 340SAR-200. Saab 340SAR-200 features 360-degree scanning search radar, FLIR, wide observer windows rescue equipment and life raft drop systems, system operator consoles, expanded communication systems and a sophisticated flight and operations management system. The rear of the cabin is arranged in a quick-change layout, carrying either passengers or cargo.

On 21 July 2006, Regional Express (Rex) of Australia and Saab reached an agreement for the leasing of one Saab 340B plus the leasing extension of another four leased Saab 340Bs already in revenue service with Rex. The agreement was for a period of 5-year.

On 28 September 2006, Australian carrier Regional Express (Rex) and Saab Aircraft Leasing reached an agreement on a long-term lease of 25 Saab 340B+ airplanes. These aircraft were scheduled for delivery to the Australian operator between December 2006 and 2009.
