Description:
HUGIN 1000 is an autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Kongsberg and the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment as part of HUGIN MRS (Mine Reconnaissance System) program. The HUGIN underwater vehicle was developed for the offshore oil and gas surveying market.
The HUGIN MRS was tested by the Royal Norwegian Navy between 2002 and 2003. The tests were carried out by the mine-hunter vessel KNM Karmony comprising in-route surveying, overt and covert rapid environment assessment, and mine counter measures in national and international exercises.
The HUGIN 1000 has been equipped with lithium-polymer battery and synthetic aperture sonar. The HUGIN MRS initial operational capability is slated for 2005 with testing to keep going in 2004 (exercises Joint Winter and Blue Game). The production model will incorporate a high resolution interferometer sonar.
The HUGIN 3000 survey unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) is the latest member of HUGIN family. It features improved navigation capabilities, a range payload sensors and was certified for operation at 3,000 meters depth.
C & C Technologies Inc. of Lafayette, Louisiana, USA contracted two HUGIN 3000 deep water Autonomous Underwater Vehicles in 2004 with an additional unit ordered in March 2005. These Hugins are employed for commercial deepwater operations.
