Description: The Remus (Remote Environmental Measuring UnitS) is a family of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) developed by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Hydroid to operate at 100 to 6,000 meters in depth. The AUVs can be equipped with a variety of payloads and sensors the meet the customer's requirements in both oceanic and shallow waters. The Remus family is suitable for the following applications: Hydrographic surveys; Mine counter measure (MCM) operations; Harbor security operations; Environmental monitoring; Debris field mapping; Search and salvage operations; Fishery operations; and Scientific sampling and mapping.

The Remus 600 is the most versatile member of the Remus Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) family and was designed to meet the requirements of the US Navy. Remus 600 offers extended endurance (70 hours), increased payload capacity, and greater maximum operating depth (up to 600 meters). In addition, the modular vehicle can be re-configured for operations at 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters in depth. Powered by a 5 kw-hr lithium ion rechargeable battery the Remus 600 mission endurance depends on vehicle's speed and payload's power consumption. Standard sensor equipment includes: ADCP/Doppler Velocity Log; Inertial Navigation Unit; Side Scan Sonar; Iridium satellite communications; GPS; Pressure; Conductivity & Temperature. It was developed with funding coming from the US Navy's Office of Naval Research. The Remus 600 leverages the same proven software and electronic sub-systems found in the Remus 100.

In September 2007, the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced its intention to purchase two Remus 600 AUVs for mine countermeasure operations under a contract valued at £5.5 million. The Remus 600 initial operational capability with the Royal Navy was expected for 2009.
