Description: The Sapphires is an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) being developed by Saab Underwater Systems as a demonstrator for the next generation of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The Sapphires is equipped with a high definition sonar to see through the bottom sediments and GPS-based navigation system. The vehicle can be used either in over water mode or fully submerged. Saab reported that the Sapphires AUV was used for the first time during a police murder investigation in November 2007.
