Description: The 5,000 pounds class BLU-122 penetrator warhead emerged from Pre-Planned Product Improvement (P3I) of the proven BLU-113 warhead which typically was used on the GBU-28 laser-guided bunker buster bomb. BLU-122 was developed to provide the US Air Force with the capability to hold more targets at risk than its predecessor. In addition, the BLU-122 provides more penetration power, survivability and lethality against buried/hardened targets.

On 31 May 2005, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems was awarded a $5.2 million contract by the US Air Force for the first production lot of BLU-122s. This first lot included 71 warheads to be delivered before March 2006.
