Description: The AGS Advanced Gun System is a single barrel 155mm naval stabilized gun being developed by United Defense to provide flexible, sustainable and affordable firepower against a wide range of littoral, inland, and surface targets. The US Navy's DD(X) destroyer, formerly DD-21 Zumwalt, will be the primary user of such a weapon system with two guns on each ship.

The AGS features a single barrel, stabilized, low-observable design. It will sustain firing rates of up to 12 rounds per minute. In addition the fully automated unmanned weapon handling storage system will have a capacity for up to 750 (920?) rounds. The AGS weapon will fire a combination of guided and ballistic 155mm munitions.

The AGS will be able to hit land targets at 100nm (185 km) with high accuracy as its primary role. Radar and Infrared signatures of the AGS gun are being reduced to provide improved ship's survivability.

The US Navy awarded United Defense a not to exceed $376 million contract for continuation of design, development and test of the AGS weapon system and the LRLAP projectile in support of the DD(X) program on 27 May 2005. The contract was scheduled to be complete by September 2010.
