Description: The LAV II, also know as the ASLAV, is a derivative of the combat proven LAV I employed by the USMC designed to meet the requirements of the Australian Army. It features high mobility, a 25mm turret-mounted main gun, lightweight armor, reduced maintainability and enhanced availability to perform reconnaissance missions.

The ASLAV entered service with the Australian Army in 1995. About 160 ASLAVs have been delivered to date to the Australian Army.

The Canadian Army procured 203 Coyote light armored vehicles intended to serve as high mobility reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle beginning in 1996. The vehicles are fitted with day and night observations systems, radar, infrared camera and laser rangefinder. Besides, the vehicle is fitted with a 25mm M242 Bushmaster cannon. A mast-equipped version of the vehicle raises its surveillance gear 10 meters above the ground to see hostile forces over obstacles and from protected positions.

The Australian Army plans to purchase up to 257 ASLAV vehicles with the first batch comprising 113 ASLAVs already delivered and a second one comprising 144 ASLAVs being delivered. In December 2003, General Dynamics was awarded a $9.8 million contract to upgrade batch 1 ASLAV vehicles to match batch 2 capabilities between 2004 and 2006.

In June 2004, Kongsberg announced that it was awarded a $3 million (MNOK 20) contract for the supply of Remote Weapons Control Systems (RWCS) in support of Australian ASLAV 2 (ASLAV batch 2) armored personnel carrier. The RWCS are identical to those that Kongsberg is delivering to the Armies of the United States, Finland and Norway. In March 2005, Kongsberg received a MNOK 40 ($6 million) contract for the supply of weapon control systems for ASLAV during 2005.
