On 7 December 2005, Finland's carrier Finnair selected Airbus A350-900 and A340-300E/Enhanced airliners for its fleet modernization program. The A350-900 order was for nine aircraft with the first one to be delivered in 2011. A350-900 engine decision was delayed to March 20, 2006, when Finnair announced that Rolls-Royce Trent 1700 was the engine powering these airplanes. The engine contract was valued at $470 million. In late March 2006 Finnair confirmed the order, took four options and delayed the first aircraft delivery to 2012. The A340-300E order was for three aircraft powered by CFM56-5C4/P engines. The first A340 delivery was due in the spring of 2007. Finnair signed the firm order contract for 11 A350XWB aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines on March 8, 2007. The engine contract was valued at $600 million at list prices. The order also included a mix of seven A340-300 and A330 aircraft. With this contract Finnair became the first airline to place a firm order for the Airbus A350 XWB wide-body passenger aircraft.
