Originally, Air New Zealand's June 2004 order for two Boeing 787-8 airplanes. Air New Zealand placed an order for two more 787-8s worth $260 million on October 27, 2005. Air New Zealand selected the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine to power them all. The four Boeing 787-8s were scheduled for delivery between December 2010 and 2011. In May 2006, Air New Zealand converted the firm order 787-8s into 787-9 Dreamliners retaining the Trent 1000 engine and the delivery schedule.

Continental Airlines agreement for the purchase of ten Boeing 7E7-8s valued at $1.3 billion announced on December 29, 2004. Contract negotiations between Continental Airlines and Boeing were concluded in early 2005 and deliveries were scheduled to begin in 2009. Boeing and Continental Airlines agreement for the purchase of 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and an undisclosed mix of 24 Next-Generation 737 airplanes announced on June 6, 2006. All in, the aircraft deal was valued at $3 billion at list prices. The Boeing 787-8s deliveries to Continental were scheduled to commence in 2009 and 737 deliveries in 2008. On 21 June 2006, Continental Airlines selected the General Electric GEnx engine to power its 787 aircraft. The engine contract was valued at $250 million. On 3 August 2006, Boeing and Continental Airlines agreed on conversion of 12 737 firm order aircraft into the Boeing 737-900ER. On December 5, 2006, Continental converted 12 additional Next-Generation 737s into 737-900ERs. Continental's first 737-900ER was scheduled for delivery in 2008. Continental Airlines announced that it was converting 12 previously ordered Boeing 787-8 jetliners into 787-9 airplanes on March 12, 2007. In addition, Continental ordered five Boeing 787-9s bringing its total Boeing 787 commitments to 25 airplanes.
