Airbus Military has announced that the engine to power the A400M military transport aircraft will be designed and manufactured by the European consortium EuroProp International, also known as EPI.

The new turboprop will be designated the TP400-D6 and will provide about 10,000 horsepower. It will be based on proven technology incorporating three-shaft civil aero engine architecture.

According to EADS sources, the new TP400-D6 meets all the A400M requested specifications.

The EPI consortium comprises UK's Rolls-Royce, France's Snecma, Germany's MTU and Spain's ITP. The EPI consortium won A400M engine contract in competition with Pratt and Whitney Canada.

The EPI claims that the TP400-D6 will be the most powerful turboprop ever produced in the western world and will make the A400M the fastest turboprop powered aircraft.

The A400M military transport aircraft is a multinational program partnered by Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Current plans call for at least 180 A400M to be produced with first aircraft delivery in 2009.

A400M export market success is expected.
