EADS announced that the Australian Ministry of Defense Selected Airbus/EADS' A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) aircraft to meet Australian Defence Forces requirements.

Australia will acquire five A330 MRTT aircraft to replace its aging Boeing 707 based tanker fleet. The A330 MRTT is a derivative of proven Airbus A330 airliner and the Australian variant will be equipped with a flying boom air-to-air refueling technology.

This selection includes two contracts worth €1.2 billion ($1.5 billion) to be negotiated between the parties, EADS, Qantas Defence Services and the Australian authorities. This selection also includes life/logistics support for a period of 20 years. The first A330 MRTT aircraft is due to be delivered to the Australian Air Force in 2007.

The A330 MRTT can be equipped with flying boom and hose and drogue air refueling technology. The United Kingdom also selected A330 MRTT aircraft for its FSTA program earlier this year with negotiations between the parties to be ended soon.
